Each April during National Child Abuse Prevention Month, the Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center coordinates a community-wide Blue Ribbon Campaign. The blue ribbon is a national symbol of the need to protect our children. The purpose of this campaign is to raise awareness about child abuse and to generate support for programs and services to help victims. We are so thankful for the continued support that our community gives to the children served through the CAC.
Bonnie Finley, a grandmother, made a personal commitment to stop child abuse when she tied a royal blue ribbon on the antenna of her car after her own 4-year-old grandson was killed at the hands of his mother’s abusive boyfriend. Little did she know the impact that this simple gesture would have on people and communities across the United States. Out of her tragedy and heartache emerged an outcry and thus began a National Blue Ribbon Campaign.
Last year, your Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center provided interviews to 351 children with new allegations of abuse. More than 700 victims of abuse received therapy, crisis counseling, and criminal justice support services. Child abuse is a problem that is too big for one person or one agency to solve. It takes an entire community working together to take a stand and speak out on behalf of our children.
